Vintage Notes

In this fine vintage, mild weather in May and June brought an even set, but a slightly reduced crop. Here in the hills just north of Upper Dry Creek, the summer was warm but never hot. As harvest approached, temperatures climbed—as did sugars—while we waited for flavors to mature. To fully extract color and tannin, we extended the time the wine spent on the skins to two weeks. It was pumped over daily, and this increase in circulation and maceration time has produced a wine that is both more aromatic and more structured than in past years. Aged in well-tempered, air-dried american oak, this lovely carignane is enjoyable now, and will develop fully over the next five years. PD (11/02)
