Vintage Notes

This year’s early spring enabled the petite sirah vines at York Creek to set a full crop. In the three parcels we harvest—Upper Dynamite, Sonoma, and Burger Hill—the grapes ripened by late September. We destemmed them, and left roughly forty percent as whole berries to moderate tannin extraction. After three days, a vigorous natural fermentation began, carrying the wine to dryness within a week of harvest. We kept the three lots separate through pressing, completion of a natural malolactic, and racking to barrel. Combined after a year, the wine spent an additional year in barrel, further softening the still-substantial tannins. Intense black raspberry fruit and classic black pepper spice characterize this exceptional petite sirah. It is appealing now, but will richly reward those with the patience to wait twenty years.
