Vintage Notes

This is our thirty-third vintage from the small parcel of hundred-year-old vines at Jimsomare. Monte Bello Ridge is one of the coolest vineyard locations in California; its long growing season makes it ideal for the Bordeaux varieties, but less suited to zinfandel, which thrives in the warmth of Napa and Sonoma. Because these vines are so old, and set so little fruit (half to three-quarters ton/acre), they can ripen on the ridge. Acidity, however, is very high. In the 2000 vintage, a burst of September heat helped to produce a rich, opulent, exotic wine. Lovely now, this exceptional zinfandel will be at its best over the next seven years.

History

Since 1962, Ridge has championed single-vineyard winemaking, searching California for those rare sites where climate, soil, and varietal are ideally matched. Our aim is to guide the natural process; using traditional methods, we strive to produce exceptional wines from distinctive fruit.
