Vintage Notes

York Creek experienced yet another cool spring this year, similar to 1998 in delay of flowering and set. A warm indian summer ripened the grapes fully; each of the eight parcels was picked separately, starting with the youngest, and ending with the mature vines of Dynamite Hill. To achieve balanced tannins, a number of the grapes were fermented without destemming or crushing. During primary fermentation, the juice was circulated over the skins to increase depth and richness. Following a natural malolactic, the wine was racked to american oak barrels, of which twenty-six percent were new. The rest were well-tempered—a combination of two, four, and five years old. This is classic York Creek petite sirah— elegant and complex, reflecting both varietal and vineyard. Enjoyable now, it will continue to develop over the next twelve years.
