This year, the vines at Pagani were pruned late to avoid possible damage from spring frosts; onset of the growing season was also late. As a result, the crop did not ripen until the last days of October. Nature, however, took pity, hel doff the rain; the fruit was some of the loveliest of the vintage. The separate lots were fermented in small tanks and aged in new, one-year-old, and two-year-old air-dried american oak. Rich and full-bodied, the young wine shows intense wild berry complemented by lively spice. It is very enjoyable now, but will evolve into something different-and still more exotic-of aged for another eight to ten years.
Since 1962, Ridge has championed single-vineyard winemaking, searching California for those rare sites where climate, soil, and varietal are ideally matched. Our aim is to guide the natural process; using traditional methods, we strive to produce exceptional wines from distinctive fruit.
