Vintage Notes

In 1991, a late start in spring moved the whole growing season back two or three weeks. The first twelve tons harvested from Dynamite Hill in late October were very ripe, providing a rich, solid base on which to build. Bright, lovely fruit from the second half of Dynamite was combined with Lake and young Devils Hill grapes to add balance and complexity. For the first time in years, we preferred the unfined wine. This full, spicy petite sirah is sensuous despite its firm tamnnins. It is presently enjoyable with hearty fare, and will develop more fully over the next ten to fifteen years.

History

30 years ago Ridge made its first Monte Bello, and twenty-one years ago its first York Creek Petite Sirah. As pioneers of single-vineyard wines, we explored California in search of great vineyards where climate, soil, and varietal are perfectly matched. To bring the distinctive character of each vineyard to the wine, we use the minimal handling typical of traditional winemaking.
