After the marvelous, month-long rains of March, the formation or set of the grapes on these 19th-century vines took place over a longer period than usual. Those that formed early were harvested, fully ripe, in September. The rest, just over half the crop, did not ripen until mid-October. In combining these two distinct wines, our tastings showed that small amounts of Alicante and petite sirah moderated the firm acidity and brought out the richness of the fruit. Enjoyable soon after release, this unusual, cool-climate zinfandel should be at its best over the next five or six years.
Founded in 1959, Ridge was one of the first of today’s small, fine California wineries—limiting production to achieve the highest quality. From the beginning, close adherence to traditional winemaking techniques has set Ridge apart. This approach determines our style and includes the use of natural yeast submerged-cap fermentations, aging in small oak cooperage, and careful racking at each transfer to achieve clarity. Located above 2300 feet on Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains, our winery overlooks San Francisco Bay
