Vintage Notes

Unusually warm weather in early spring reduced the set at York Creek by twenty percent, and a cool growing season intensified varietal character. As harvest began, it became clear that tannin levels in the grapes were quite high. In response, we reduced extraction by cutting back on the circulation of juice during fermentation and, in the assemblage, increased the amount of merlot. This wine will have begun to soften by the time it is released, and will mature more fully if laid down for five to ten years. PD (5/89)

History

Founded in 1959, Ridge was one of the first of today’s small, fine California wineries- limiting production to achieve the highest quality. From the beginning, close adherence to traditional winemaking techniques-including use of natural yeasts in extended fermentations and careful racking for clarity-have set Ridge apart. Located above 2300 feet on Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains, our winery and main vineyards overlook San Francisco Bay.
