Vintage Notes

In 1984, the Santa Cruz Mountains viticultural area, cooled by altitude and proximity to the ocean, escaped the extreme autumn heat typical of Napa and Sonoma in that year. The steady, warm growing season and low yields combined to give us one of our great vintages. the concentration of varietal flavor in the Jimsomare, given eighteen months in small cooperage and two finings, produced a rich, tough, flavorful Cabernet. Its fine balance lends immediate appeal. Ideally, it would develop most fully if laid down for five to ten years. PD (7/86)

History

Begun in 1959, Ridge was one of the first of today’s chateau-size California wineries-those that limit production to attempt the highest quality. From the beginning, close adherence to traditional winemaking techniques has set Ridge apart. This approach determines our style and includes the use of the natural yeasts in extended, submerged-cap fermentations, aging in small oak cooperage, and careful racking at every transfer to achieve clarity. Located above 2300 feet on Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains, our winery and main vineyards overlook San Francisco Bay.
