New Reviews from Wine & Spirits

Wine & Spirits

July 2023

Wine & Spirits features excellent reviews for six RIDGE wines in their newly-released summer issue.

Ridge 2021 Geyserville

2021 Geyserville

Alexander Valley | 95 points

“The team at Ridge manages the vineyard’s generations of vines to produce complex wines like this perfectly ripe 2021, with its dark, resinous scents of marijuana, its deep layers of rich fruit and the fruitiness of detailed tannins. The fresh, herbal complexity is pretty epic and the richness doesn’t stop. What I want from California.” -J.G.

Ridge 2020 Boatman Zinfandel

2020 Boatman Zinfandel

Alexander Valley | 94 points

“…a complex, elegant wine with old-vine savor. It’s robust and cool, with smoky prune-plum flavors, scents of green herb stems, coffee and chocolate, as if built for a spicy molé. Yes, there’s some smokiness to it, and it is a 2020, but the fruit is so alive and tangible, so firm and gracious that the smoke is just an accent. Completely delicious.” -J.G.

Ridge 2021 East Bench Zinfandel

2021 East Bench Zinfandel

Dry Creek Valley | 93 points

“…a floral, red-fruited beauty. That fruit may not have the depth of character of great zin from centenary vines, but it has its own elegant shape, funneling cherry jam and cherry-leaf scents into a tight focus, dry and austere in its youth. Like other classics from Ridge, this will benefit from years in the cellar.” -J.G.

Ridge 2020 Mazzoni Home Ranch

2020 Mazzoni Home Ranch

Alexander Valley | 91 points

“John Olney produced a savory and elegant field blend from Mazzoni in 2020, with plush red and black-currant flavors that last. Smokiness brings a warm, brash edge to that elegance, with tomatillo notes. Available only to mailing list members.” -J.G.

Ridge 2018 Buchignani Ranch Zinfandel

2018 Buchignani Zinfandel

Alexander Valley | 91 points

“This grows on a steep, rocky slope in the western hills of Alexander Valley, where Stan Buchignani’s family planted zinfandel in the 1940s and ’50s. The wine has the warm spice of fennel seeds, over light flavors of wild strawberries and herbs. Oak tannins give the finish a dark shade, while the fruit feels fully mature.” -J.G.

2021 Mancini Ranch

2021 Mancini Ranch

Russian River Valley | 90 points

“This has the high-toned red fruit of carignane (73 percent) blended with zin, coming together with the race of spring river water under the peppery green and red notes of zinnias. It’s an austere red, light and soft.” -J.G.
