Spring 1999 was as late as spring 1998. Again, we evened the set on these head-trained nineteenthcentury vines by thinning. Again, we pruned to expose the fruit to sun and air. Perfect fall weather in this cool region allowed us to delay harvest until the third week of October. Sugars were very high, as was acidity. Fermented on the natural yeast, this wonderful wine aged in air-dried american oak barrels. Only fifteen percent of these were new, in order to accentuate the intense, almost jammy berry fruit. Delicious now, this Jimsomare will be at its best over the next five years.
