Winemaker Tasting Notes

Nose of blackberry, pepper, dark cherry and sage. Full-bodied with coated tannins and flavors of blueberry scone, black tea and plum. SR (12/25)

Vintage Notes

This is our tenth vintage producing a wine from these three classic Rhône varieties. Syrah thrives on the clay-rich soils of Lytton West, lending both color and structure. Grenache provides spicy red fruit. Mataro adds a floral complexity to the aroma. Aging for fifteen months in American oak has softened tannins. Enjoyable upon release, it will develop fully over seven years. JO (4/25)

History

This wine comes from two hillside parcels at Lytton West. One is planted entirely to syrah while the other is planted to half grenache and half mataro. Mataro, a late ripening variety synonymous with mourvedre, does not always mature before the onset of fall rains.

Growing Season

Rainfall: 64 inches (above average)
Bloom: The end of June
Weather: Late and prolonged harvest due to consistently cool weather throughout the growing season.

Winemaking

Harvest Dates: 5 & 8 October
Grapes: Average Brix 24.1˚
TA: 4.1 g/L
pH: 3.89
Fermentation: Natural primary and secondary; daily pump-overs.
Barrels: 100% air-dried American oak barrels (15% new, 10% one year old, and 75% four and five years old).
Aging: Seventeen months in barrel

Hand-harvested, organically grown grapes; destemmed and crushed; fermented on the native yeasts, followed by a full malolactic on the naturally occurring malolactic bacteria; oak from barrel aging; minimum effective sulfur for this wine (35 ppm at crush and 183 ppm over the course of aging); pad filtered at bottling. In keeping with our philosophy of minimal intervention, this is the sum of our actions.
