82% Zinfandel, 18% Carignane
2005
Sonoma County
14.6%
A late start to the growing season delayed harvest by three weeks, and August’s cool weather allowed deep color and flavor to develop ahead of sugar content. Water stress in parts of the main zinfandel block led to uneven ripeness, forcing us to pick each area selectively over a period of several days. These lots fermented in small tanks fitted with grids that hold the skins submerged in juice. In the carignane tanks we let the cap of skins float, to moderate tannin extraction. Naturally-occuring yeasts completed the fermentation in six days on average; a lengthy malolactic postponed assemblage until June. The lively acidity of carignane imparts elegance and balance to the zinfandel’s ripe, exotic fruit. Delightful now, this wine will be at its best over the next four to five years.
Since 1962, Ridge has championed single-vineyard winemaking, searching California for those rare sites where climate, soil, and varietal are ideally matched. Our aim is to guide the natural process; using traditional methods, we strive to produce exceptional wines from distinctive fruit.
