91% Zinfandel, 9% Carignane
1999
Buchignani Ranch
Alexander Valley

This is a companion wine to the carignane from the same, pristine old vineyard. There is only one small parcel of zinfandel here, side by side with five of carignane. The zinfandel ripens a few days earlier; it was harvested during the last days of September. After natural primary and secondary fermentations, the wine was racked to air-dried american oak barrels. To highlight the vineyard’s distinctive character, and the bright cherry fruit, we limited new wood to eight percent. A small amount of carignane was included to add a note of elegance to the more rustic zinfandel. Appealing now, the Buchignani will be at its best over the next five to six years.
Since 1962, Ridge has championed single-vineyard winemaking, searching California for those rare sites where climate, soil, and varietal are ideally matched. Our aim is to guide the natural process; using traditional methods, we strive to produce exceptional wines from distinctive fruit.
