Vintage Notes

Many vineyards set excessive crops this year; these surviving turn-of-the-century vines were self-limiting. The varietals are those “mixed blacks” favored by nineteenth-century growers—and that we at Ridge still prefer to one-hundred-percent zinfandel. Each vineyard parcel is fermented separately, which enables us to choose the finest for this Advance Tasting Program release. Forty percent was aged in new and one-year old american oak barrels, contributing a toasty nuance to the thick, red berry fruit, firm acid, and round tannins. This lovely wine will be at its most enjoyable over the next five years.

History

Giuseppe Mazzoni first made wine at the home ranch just north of Geyserville around 1910. His son Fred made the last wines there two years before his death in 1978. Ten years ago the land was sold to its present owner, Nick Oltranti, who has maintained the old vineyards.
