Vintage Notes

Devils Hill is the oldest surviving vineyard on the York Creek Ranch. The vines were planted over 60 years ago using a 7’ x 7’ spacing for cross cultivation on the steep hillsides. The yields are very low compared to the new sections and their particular character would seem to merit our continuing to make them into a separate wine. This excellent vintage shows black pepper, and the intensity of a fine year. The wine should be laid down for at least four or five years to develop further.

History

Begun in 1959, Ridge was one of the first of today’s chateau-size California wineries, that is, those that attempt only the highest quality at the quality levels of the classified chateaux (up to 40,000 cases). All the wines are aged in small oak cooperage with the majority receiving no cellar treatment other than racking. Located above 2300 feet on the Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains, our winery and main vineyards overlook San Francisco Bay.
