Vintage Notes

In 1979 and 1980 we made a zinfandel from this vineyard on the western slope of the Mayacams Range in Sonoma County. Although the grapes were the first we harvested in both years they had already ripened beyond full maturity in this warm region. The resulting wine is rather elegant and, in this case, full without being heavy. It should develop well with bottle age, but its long, dry finish might indicate that fruit and balance will be at their best over the next three or four. PD(3/81)

History

Begun in 1959, Ridge was one of the first of today’s chateau-size California wineries, that is, those that attempt only the highest quality at the quantity levels of the classified chateaux (up to 40,000 cases). All the wines are aged in small oak cooperage with the majority receiving no cellar treatment other than racking. Located above Santa Cruz Mountains, our winery and main vineyards overlook San Francisco Bay.
