Vintage Notes

At York Creek, the 1978 vintage produced an abundant Cabernet harvest and gave us the opportunity to make a separate wine that would set off the qualities of the Merlot. In the main bottling this varietal normally amount to 5-15% of the grapes and is somewhat difficult to distinguish, but here its soft, elegant character is evident. This fine wine should develop sufficiently by fall for tasting, but will improve with several more years of bottle age. PD (3/80)

History

Begun in 1959, Ridge was one of the first of today’s chateau-size California wineries, that is, those that attempt only the highest quality at the quantity levels of the classified chateaux (up to 40,000 cases). All the wines are aged in small oak cooperage with the majority receiving no cellar treatment other than racking. Located above 2300 feet on Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains, our winery and main vineyards overlook San Francisco Bay.
