60% Zinfandel, 30% Petite Sirah, 10% Carignane
Spring Mountain, Napa County
In 1978 this very small vineyard was severely pruned and instead of its former yields of twelve to eighteen barrels it gave us only six. The vines, planted more than a hundred years ago to a typical old-fashioned combination of varieties, produce a complex wine with more tannin and body than most Zinfandel. The result is a wine that ages well and, under proper conditions, will live for several decades. This vintage needs at least two or three years to begin to soften and should be in its prime with six or more years of bottle age. PD(9/80)
Begun in 1959, Ridge was one of the first of today’s chateau-size California wineries, that is, those that attempt only the highest quality at the quantity levels of the classified chateaux (up to 40,000 cases). All the wines are aged in small oak cooperage with the majority receiving no cellar treatment other than racking. Located above Santa Cruz Mountains, our winery and main vineyards overlook San Francisco Bay.
