Wine Enthusiast‘s newest Advanced Buying Guide is officially out, and two of our small-production Rhône wines have earned 95-point scores plus an Editors’ Choice designation! The 2023 vintages of Evangelho and Sandy Lane Carignane, both from historic Contra Costa County vineyards, were chosen for their excellent quality, value, and distinctive character.

“Grapes for this wine come from a heritage vineyard treasured for its rich, perfumed dark berry fruits and earthy notes on the nose. On the palate, the wine sings of red fruits, dried herbs, red licorice, blood orange slices, high-toned acidity, and just-the-right oak aging. You will be tempted to continue sampling your bottles, so purchase as much as you can. Cellar until 2035 or decant and enjoy.” -T.P.

“This wine comes from a heritage site well over 100 years old and still producing fantastic fruit. Although Carignane has long been used as a blending grape, it has great potential as a single-varietal expression. Aromas of youthful red berries, florals, dried herbs, saline, and supple oak are integrated on the nose and on the palate, offering enjoyment now or throughout the next six to 10 years, if you don’t consume it before then.” -T.P.
