2022 Lytton Estate Petite Sirah: “One of the Best Petite Sirahs on the Market”

Robb Report

February 2026

In a recent article from Robb Report, writers Mike Desimone & Jeff Jenssen highlight 7 of the the best Petite Sirahs to buy in 2026. Our 2022 Lytton Estate Petite Sirah was featured as one of the top stand outs. While Petite Sirah might not be the most widely planted or talked-about grape variety, Desimone & Jenssen note – “If you like big, fruity, and deeply concentrated red wine, we recommend enjoying a well-made bottle (or two)”

“Ridge 2022 Lytton Estate Petite Sirah is decidedly purple in the glass with aromas of black currant, red currant, and black plum with soft velvety tannins and flavors of blueberry, charcuterie, red raspberry confiture, black raspberry, and brown baking spices.”

The History of Petite Sirah

Petite Sirah was born in the late 1800s out of the lab of French botanist François Durif. In an effort to create a hardy, disease resistant variety, he crossed Syrah and Peloursin, resulting in Durif — what we know today as Petite Sirah. The grape eventually made its way to California where it was widely planted in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Initially used for its inky color and bold structure as a blending grape, winemakers began bottling Petite Sirah on its own, resulting in a richly expressive wine with remarkable aging potential.

“When made into a single variety wine such as those we’re featuring this week, you can expect dark, deep, rich ruby, inky, and garnet colors and aromas and fruit flavors of blueberry preserves, red and black plum, and blackberry with secondary notes of tobacco leaf, saddle leather dark chocolate, black pepper, and brown spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.”

Ridge Vineyards Petite Sirah

Our first varietal bottling of Petite Sirah was the 1970 vintage from the historic Butow Ranch in Redwood Valley. We continued sourcing the variety from York Creek for several decades. In 2002, we made our first bottling of Petite Sirah from our Lytton Estate vineyard, a wine that has become a beloved part of the RIDGE portfolio.
