2021 Alder Springs Falanghina

Honeysuckle and melon on the nose. Medium weight on the palate with fresh almond, brisk acidity and a lingering finish. JO (5/22)

Falanghina hales from the Campania region in southern Italy. This wine comes from the Alder Springs vineyard in Mendocino County. Inclusion of vermentino and picpoul from an adjacent vineyard parcel adds bright acidity to the delicate fruit. Intended for early consumption, this crisp, refreshing wine is ideal for summer weather and can be enjoyed over the next three years. JO (3/22)

The 2021 vintage marks our third small bottling of Falanghina from the Alder Springs Vineyard. Located in the far northern reaches of Mendocino County on the 6,000-acre Alder Springs Ranch, the vineyard sits just 12 miles from the Pacific Ocean and is an ecological gem as well as an ideal place to grow grapes. Planted to just over an acre of Falanghina, the extreme location and steep terrain produces white wines with distinct minerality and bright acidity.

Weather: 2021 had below-average winter rains and a dry spring, which led to early bloom and a relatively early harvest at Alder Springs. Grapes were harvested mid-to-late September, approximately 3 weeks ahead of average.

Fermentation: 100% direct-to-press, whole-cluster fermentation

Hand-harvested, sustainably grown grapes; whole cluster pressed; fermented on the native yeasts; natural malolactic bacteria; minimum effective sulfur for this wine (40ppm during pressing); pad filtered at bottling. In keeping with our philosophy of minimal intervention, this is the sum of our actions.
