Vintage Notes

Old-vine carignane is a largely unrecognized treasure of both southern France and northern California. In a warm climate with suitable soils, grown on headpruned vines kept to modest yields, it produces a delicious wine—redolent of ripe fruit, with floral overtones. These beautifully tended old vines along Dutcher Creek Road ripened fully in the heat of mid-September, two weeks ahead of last year. As in 1999, House Block provided most of the fruit, with a small addition from Hillside. Aged in air-dried american oak barrels—well-tempered, allowing the rich varietal fruit to dominate—this excellent wine is enjoyable now. It is a quaffing wine, and will be at its best over the next three or four years. PD (11/01)

History

Since 1962, Ridge has championed single-vineyard winemaking, searching California for those rare sites where climate, soil, and varietal are ideally matched. Our aim is to guide the natural process; using traditional methods, we strive to produce exceptional wines from distinctive fruit.
