Vintage Notes

This is the 1983 Monte Bello Cabernet, which we have declassified and are releasing as the Santa Cruz Mountains. 1983 was a very tannic vintage, and here at Ridge we had not yet begun the rigorous selection process of ’84, ’85, ’86 and ’87. During aging, the fruit seemed dominated by the tough structure. We fined to reduce excess tannin and extended the time in barrel, which has given the wine a lovely, cedary character. It will be at its best when it has had several more years to soften.

History

Founded in 1959, Ridge was one of the first of today’s small, fine California wineries—limiting production to achieve the highest quality. From the beginning, close adherence to traditional winemaking techniques has set Ridge apart. This approach determines our style and includes the use of natural yeast submerged-cap fermentations, aging in small oak cooperage, and careful racking at each transfer to achieve clarity. Located above 2300 feet on Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains, our winery overlooks San Francisco Bay
