Vintage Notes

In 1982, most California vineyards experienced their largest yields in a decade, and our estate vineyard was no exception. Instead of the very low one-and-a-half to two tons per acre typical of Monte Bello Ridge, we harvested more than three. The resulting wines were complex, but less intense. We released this portion as Santa Cruz Mountains, a designation we reserve for more approachable wines. This fine example from our region is enjoyable now, and will develop fully over the next eight years.

History

Founded in 1959, Ridge was one of the first of today’s small, fine California wineries—limiting production to achieve the highest quality. From the beginning, close adherence to traditional winemaking techniques has set Ridge apart. This approach determines our style and includes the use of natural yeast submerged-cap fermentations, aging in small oak cooperage, and careful racking at each transfer to achieve clarity. Located above 2300 feet on Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains, our winery overlooks San Francisco Bay
