Vintage Notes

Planted extensively in the south of France, this varietal was brought to California in the 1870’s, at the same time as grenache, carignan, mataro, and petite sirah. It is one of the few grapes with red flesh, and is often used to enhance a wine’s color. Following the success of our first alicante last year, we set aside the wine from the same block of eighty-year-old vines this year. After tasting, we again included zinfandel to complement the alicante’s varietal fruit. Full and structured, this rustic wine is enjoyable now, yet should develop well over the next five years. PD (2/96)

History

Since 1962, Ridge has championed single-vineyard winemaking, exploring California in search of great vineyards where climate, soil and varietal are ideally matched. Fine wine, when made traditionally, is the result of a natural process. Using traditional methods and minimal handling, we strive to produce the highest quality wines from superior and distinctive fruit. We are proud that our three decades are an integral part of California’s winemaking history.
