Vintage Notes

In 1990, excellent growing conditions fully ripened both the upper- and lower-elevation merlot plantings on Bradford Mountain Ranch. In fermentation, the typically firm tannins were moderated by inclusions of roughly forty percent whole berries, which reduces extraction from the seeds. In assembling the wine, we added cabernet sauvignon for further complexity. Superb balance makes the wine accessible now. Several years of bottle age will enhance its richness. PD (6/92)

History

Founded in 1959, Ridge was one of the first of today’s small, fine California wineries- limiting production to achieve the highest quality. From the beginning, close adherence to traditional winemaking techniques has set Ridge apart. This approach determines our style and includes submerged cap fermentation, racking to achieve clarity, and filtering only when necessary for stability. Our winery and estate vineyards are located above 2300 feet on Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains, overlooking San Francisco and the Bay Area.
